Our editorial standard

We aim to make commercial electricity costs understandable without hiding assumptions. Every calculator should show the inputs that control its result, separate energy from demand and fixed costs where applicable, and state when a utility tariff or qualified professional is the authoritative source.

Source priority

1. Current utility tariffs and regulatory documents
2. U.S. government agencies and national laboratories
3. Manufacturer technical documentation for equipment-specific claims
4. Recognized engineering and industry standards
5. Secondary sources only when they add necessary context

We link to important sources on the page whenever practical. State benchmark rates are clearly labeled as averages rather than individual utility offers.

Calculation review

Calculator logic is separated into testable functions. We check units, boundary cases, worked examples, and the relationship between displayed formulas and code. Estimates are screening tools and do not replace interval metering, a current tariff, an engineer, a tax adviser, or a financial proposal.

AI-assisted work

AI may assist with drafting, code, organization, or quality checks. It is not treated as a factual source. Published claims and formulas are reviewed against cited material, and pages are edited for the intended business audience. We do not publish large volumes of unreviewed automated pages.

Updates and corrections

Guides display a reviewed date. We update pages when a source, benchmark, formula, or material explanation changes. If you find an error, send the page URL, the statement or calculation in question, and supporting evidence to hello@powercostlabs.com. Material corrections are made as promptly as practical.
